Since Filipinos are taught the language as early as in grade school, you can start with reviewing the basic parts of speech. You can start with nouns and pronouns since these are necessary to construct a sentence. Likewise, study verbs and adjectives for these will complete a sentence. Remember to differentiate between singular and plural forms.

Once you have learned nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives, begin constructing your own sentences. You can start with simple three to five word sentences that convey a complete idea. There are basic sentence patterns that you can follow. All you need to do is to just change the subject and the predicate. You also have to make sure that the singularity or plurality matches.

To practice your knowledge in grammar and sentence construction, take quizzes. You can buy books on the subject. There are also websites, computer programs and mobile phone apps that test your knowledge and comfort in using the language. What is even great about these programs is that these do not just evaluate you, but these also help you set and follow up on your learning goals.

Improve your language comprehension by reading publications. Choose a material that is interesting to you so that you will not be bored. Broadsheets and fiction books are reading materials that will expose you to the use of the language. After finishing each material, take time to write a summary of what you have just read.

Listen to native or fluent speakers of the language. If you are not familiar with anyone who can assist you on this, you can simply watch foreign movies. This will familiarize you to the sound of the language as it is spoken casually. While listening to music is also an interesting activity, take note that there are songs that do not follow grammar rules.

Study pronunciation by using a dictionary for learning the correct accentuation of each word. If you have access to the internet, online dictionaries provide the option for you to listen to the pronunciation. Repeat each word several times and use each in a sentence until the correct way of saying it comes out naturally.

As you continuously study the language, find avenues for you to practice your skills. You can join language clubs so that you can meet like-minded people. You may also look for a learning buddy, with whom you can practice your speaking skills. Find conversational questions that may be asked during daily discourse. Pick a question from a bowl and try to answer it extemporaneously.

It may take some time to acquire fluency, yet this is not impossible with continuous study and practice. In the Philippines, this will not be difficult to do with the abundance of learning materials and movies.
