The new wave and punk genres appear to have been mostly popular during the 1990s. Regardless, there is a group out of Minneapolis known as the magnolias whom still have a number of fans. Having originally formed in 1984, the group has gone through a series of line up changes since inception, save for that of John Freeman, the only original member remaining in the line up.
When it comes the sound, the group seems to be caught somewhere between punk and metal though extremely identifiable by long time fans. For, with saw buzzing guitar licks, John's caterwauling, an incredible rhythm section and songwriting, when fans hear the music, most immediately recognize John Freeman's guitar playing and vocals.
With a sound similar to influences such as the Buzzcocks, The Real Kids, the Undertones, The Only Ones and The Clash, it is surprising the punk rockers have not been more successful on the punk scene. At the same time, while punk was popular in the past, there are very few punk bands still playing live shows. In fact, it almost seems as if pop is now the new punk. Most likely, thanks to shows such as American Idol and The Voice, in which most contestants are categorized as Country, Jazz, Pop or Rock And Roll.
The group released an LP and EP after signing with Alias records in 1992. After which, Street Date Tuesday was released on Two Tone records in 1996. While this is the case, the group seems to have a slow period and have gone hiatus just when punk was becoming popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While playing sporadic live shows in the late 1990s, the band has not been playing as many live shows as when the group first formed in the 80s.
Once Better Late Than Never, an LP consisting of unreleased demo tracks and outtakes came out in 2007 along with an EP, the group went on an European tour in 2008, not returning home until 2009. With the tour being a success, the group saw the need for live shows and went on to record and play live shows from 2009 to 2011. While currently on a break, the group hopes to reform and tour in the near future.
The band host a fan page on Facebook, and has a number of videos on YouTube which have received mixed reviews. According to the Facebook page, it appears the last show was in July of 2017. While this is the case, as the group only plays sporadically, there could have been other shows since that time. When it comes to YouTube videos, there are a number of live shows and studio recordings, most of which are punk in genre.
The current line up now consist of John Freeman, Mike Leonard, Pat McKenna and Dave Randall. While past members include Eric Kassel, Dave Wiegardt, Danna Stewart, Johnny O'Halloran, Caleb Plmiter, Kent Militzer, Sam Planet, Tim Cook, Kyle Killorin, Ron Anderson, John Joyce and Tom Lischmann. While most bands list which artists play which instruments, this does not seem to be the case when it comes to current or past line-ups.
Individuals interested in booking the group, locating a live show or obtaining merchandise can refer to the band's Facebook page. For, the band does not appear to have an active page on the world wide web. In addition, by clicking the Follow button on the Facebook page, fans can stay updated with regards to all things magnolias.
